Essential Tips for Loading a Young Horse
In this video, I show you how to put a young horse on the trailer.
This is Lilly's second time seeing the trailer (the first day is in Basic Horse Training Academy), and you will see how well our groundwork has set her up to win. I will give you some essential tips to remember when training your young horse to trailer load.
This work shouldn't be done in a day. You work a little at a time to keep your horse calm, confident and trusting in you. You also work at it with your horse AFTER you have taught your horse groundwork. Set your horse up to win!
Entering the float proves how good your groundwork and relationship with your horse are. How good is yours? If your groundwork is good and you have your horse's trust, you shouldn't have a problem loading your horse!

Teaching Your OTTB To Stretch Under Saddle
Переглядів 7 тис.7 місяців тому
This is a "real life" video demonstrating retraining with a very green OTTB and shows you a warts-and-all look at a training day. In this video, I show you how to teach your OTTB to stretch under the saddle. This is an important skill that will help your horse stay comfortable and injury-free during ridden work. Stretching also helps with the OTTB's mental attitude; when the horse's body soften...

Does your horse listen to you? If he doesn't, or if you are unsure, then this is the exercise for you! Welcome to my latest video, focused on a simple exercise to check whether your horse is listening to you. If he is not listening this exercise will soon have him following your aids. First Ride Out 16 Days Under Saddle

This week's video features Aiden, a 4y/o Haflinger who was sent to me to be started under saddle. Aiden is a very smart but reactive horse, so I decided to take him out in the world to keep him challenged and interested in his work. The video shows a completely unedited first ride out after 16 days under saddle. I love training horses, and starting horses under saddle "colt starting" has been o...
Helping Your OTTB Horse To Find Relaxation Under Saddle

In this video, I show you a completely unedited training session with Dale, the OTTB (Off the Track ThoroughBred). You will see that he finds it hard to relax under saddle and once I ask him to move into the trot he moves around with his head in the air and hollow in the back. This is not good for him from either a mental or a physical perspective. I will show you what I do to get him to relax ...

    your videos are always awesome and so helpful. Thank you so much! I have a small question please: you said at the begin that he should length the stride and his body. We do not want to throw the contact. I understand this. But do i put slightly forward my hands when i ask? Just slightly or do i only soft my hands, i mean open my hands only? Thank you so so much!

      When she starts to fall in straighten her with your outside rein (so ride a straight line for a few steps and slow her down a little. See if this helps. 😊

    I’m very late to this, but would these same methods work on a mini horse? I’m volunteering at a barn with a very pushy mini mare, and they’re trying to fix it before they adopt her out. She has no respect for personal space whatsoever, and even if you stand a little in front of her, she throws a fit and tries the shove past you.

    • @BasicHorseTraining
      @BasicHorseTraining 9 днів тому

      It should definitely work. A horse is a horse no matter what the size. If she is really pushy you might need to use a fair bit of energy to get her out of your space. Just be assertive not aggressive ☺️

      They are two different lessons. Make sure she can go up to the front and just stand there. Then you ask her back before she decides to go out. Then spend time putting her half in half out and stop. Then out from there. Once she will stand at the front you slowly make your way down her body scratching her and making it enjoyable. Just move half a step to start with them move back to her head telling her how good she is. Maybe back her out then and have a “rest” somewhere. It takes time but I know you can do it. 😊

    Hi Josie, I had my 3 yr old loading lovely like this, and after an outing to a trainer, he suddenly refused to load to go home. He pulled back and refused. Nothing else had changed. I am currently starting over with this practice and being patient with him. Any thoughts?

    • @BasicHorseTraining

      He had probably about 4 or or 5 trips in the trailer by himself and many more practice sessions. He would load mostly by himself with me pointing in and cueing him . Then suddenly decided he didn't want to load to go home. He pulled back and refused. Never had a negative experience and is bonded to me. It baffles me!

    • @BasicHorseTraining
      @BasicHorseTraining 10 днів тому

      Yes, move down his side. Shake things, make noise and if he backs out thats ok. Just put him back in quietly and carmly and do it again. He will get used to it. If you can send him out on a circle you can use the same aids to send him in the float ahead of you and get him to eventually self load. I am always amazed that horses will overcome their inbuilt fear of confined spaces and go into trailers for us. They never cease to amaze me 🥰

    Years ago an instructor had our horse club group learn belly dance hip movements, which happen to be the same movements in sit trot/western amble. It was easier for us pre-teen girls to get into our heads, and made the motion feel more natural.

    What you said about perfection really hits home for me. I find that I beat myself up pretty heavily whenever I make a mistake or lack knowledge. I am currently trying to broaden my knowledge in horsemanship and horse training. I work with a mare named Red who was previously abused. She is such a good girl, and has a lot of potential to be a horse that can change lives, but she struggles with anxiety, no confidence and mistrust. I keep thinking that because I’m not perfect, I’m failing her. However, what you said is so true. Me and Red are learning together. I understand that she can’t always be perfect, so why don’t I understand that for myself? As long as I am patient, empathic, and always willing to learn, I can provide an environment for this horse to flourish. Thank you for such a simple and important reminder.

    Great advice. I instinctively got off my horse while out trail riding...he was just insufferable wanting to get back to the farm. Tossing his head, chomping at the bit, jigging... But when we got back I did not make it easy for him... he wanted to run and I made him do that in a large round pen. Once he was basically exhausted I rode him back out on the trail. Same behavior...over and over I did this until he figured it out...his relief was on the trail.... not at the barn. Was my horse for 17 years... miss him all the time.

    4:25 BALANCE is so huge with this. I have been researching and practicing excessively the last couple of months to figure out how to do it. I knew the aids, I knew the theory, I knew it all but whenever I executed it, it never seemed to work. Until one day, a new trainer told me to sit the fk up straight, and the second I did, the horse went on the bit. The second I got crooked again, the horse lost his posture. I tried this with all horses that I'm riding, and this one thing, just sitting the fk up straight, solved my issues with ALL OF THEM. Now its not a mystery anymore. So please guys, if you're struggling, if your horse dosnt respond softly to your legs in particular, please check if youre actually sitting straight before going on to using spurs or anything like that. It really may be just that simple.
